Endless Journey - Best Of Vol. 1 - 2 - 3

Endless Journey is a compilation series featuring rare 60's garage, freakbeat, psychedelia and wild R & B singles from UK & US bands, such as T Swift & The Electric Bag, Cycle, Creme Soda, Paisleys & more. Groovy names and the music is pretty groovy too.

As the title would indicate, this is the best of the first three volumes put together on one CD. The sound is better than on a lot of these types of comps, you`ll hear that some songs are taken from old 45`s, but it doesn’t sound like its been lifted from an Edison wax-cylinder. Lots of wild freak-outs, fuzzed & distorted guitars, strange lyrics and druggy garage-weirdness to be found here. A good compilation with a lot of very strong songs, one of the better compilations Ive heard.

Candida Pax - Day (1971)

Super rare early '70's private pressing of UK religious psych/rock that mixes folky textures with rock resulting in a haunting blend of melody and moody dreaminess. Besides Parameter this is the rarest release on the UK Deroy label but not only that.. it's absolutely superb!

Alamo - Alamo (1971)

This great album, released in 1971 in Memphis USA, is an extremely good hard guitar album with some nice extended instrumental jams in the style of Allman Brothers (on acid), Homer and "Nantucket" era-Mountain. Excellent and highly recommended '70s US psychedelic rock..…

Aunt Mary - Aunt Mary (1970)

"Self-titled" album from the norvegian band Aunt Mary may be considered as one of the first (and, possibly, the best) progressive rock product from this country. Eleven tracks present an interesting mixture of psychedelic, blues and jazz with some prog tendencies. Each track has a memorable melodie with short, but sweet to ears solo part from musicians. Jan Groth with his hammond makes a unique atmosphere on tracks like "Whispering farewell" and "Rome wasn't bult in one day". Alongside with with guitarist Bjorn Christiansen they provide some strong vocal - separetly and together. Their fromula of keyboard-oriented progressive rock later will be used by such legendary norvegian groups as Polol Vah and Titanic, but musicians from Aunt Mary were the first on this way. Great album by a great band! Should be heard by any lover of early prog.

Barclay James Harvest - Early Morning Onwards (1972)

Barclay James Harvest was formed in 1967, and recorded one single for the Parlophone label, "Early Morning", in 1968, before signing to EMI's new Harvest label, which was named after the band, in 1969. They recorded four albums for Harvest, including the classic Once Again" (1971), which featured the prog-rock anthem, "Mocking Bird".

Switching to the Polydor label in 1973, the band began to break through in the UK market with albums such as 1974's Everyone Is Everybody Else and Barclay James Harvest Live (their first Top 40 album). A series of chart albums and sell-out tours followed, and by 1977 the band had broken through into the German market with the album Gone To Earth, which stayed on the German chart for more than three years and spawned the single "Hymn", which remains on e of the band's most popular songs to this day.

The first major change to the line-up was in 1979 when Wolstenholme left, citing his musical dissatisfaction, to start a solo career. He was not replaced, the band electing to continue as a trio augmented by session musicians such as Kevin McAlea, Colin Browne and Bias Boshell.

Whilst their popularity in Britain waned after Wolstenholme's departure, the band scored numerous successes elsewhere in Europe, culminating in an enormous free concert on the steps of Berlin's Reichstag which was attended by 175,000 people. The live album of that concert went straight to number 1 in Germany and achieved gold status, as did many of the band's albums through the late seventies and eighties, including XII (1978), Eyes of the Universe (1979), Turn of the Tide (1981), Ring of Changes (1983), Victims of Circumstance (1984), Face to Face (1987), Welcome to the Show (1990) and 1992's TV-advertised Best of Barclay James Harvest.

By the mid-1990s success was harder to come by, and 1993's Caught in the Light and 1997's River of Dreams failed to chart, whilst concert attendances were well down. The band's 1997 tour of Germany and Switzerland proved to be their last, with John Lees re-joining Woolly Wolstenholme in a new band, "Barclay James Harvest Through The Eyes Of John Lees", and Les Holroyd and Mel Pritchard joined by ex-members of Sad Cafe and Monroe in "Barclay James Harvest featuring Les Holroyd". Mel Pritchard very sadly passed away in January 2004.

Blodwyn Pig - Ahead Rings Out (1969)

Formed in November 1968 by Mick Abrahams after he left Jethro Tull. They recorded two good rock albums and toured the US. Their first album had a pig's head on the front cover with a ring through its nose, a fag in its mouth, sunglasses and headphones. The playing on the album is good but it isn't always matched by the material. Still, it had its moments, listen out particularly for some classic progressive rock on "The Modern Alchemist" and "Ain't Ya Coming Home, Babe?" which conclude each side of the album. Their second album saw them move away from their blues roots towards a more soulful sound. The See For Miles CD reissue of this contains two additional cuts, both sides of their second 45. In September 1970, Pete Banks joined from Yes but the new line-up just didn't gel and the band split up at the end of 1970. Subsequently, Mick Abrahams formed his own band; Andy Pyle joined Savoy Brown and was then in a later incarnation of Juicy Lucy with Ron Berg.

The band reformed briefly in 1974 and played some live gigs, but had no vinyl output.

Mountain Bus - Sundance (1971)

The Grateful Dead sounding band that was sued by Windfall Music and Columbia Records for using the name "Mountain", although they actually had been together for 4 years before Mountain was officially formed!! Their classic "Sundance" LP from 1971 plus unreleased live and studio material off the Master Tapes from this Chicago band- A total of 13 songs and 70 minutes of music.

Reissue of the rare and great 1971 album by this Chicago band. Psychedelic country tinged rock, that has drawn comparisons with Grateful Dead, possibly for their own blissed out version of "I Know You Rider". Long jamming tracks with great spacey mid sections and liquid, twin lead guitar work... This reissue includes five bonus tracks and is taken from the master tapes... Great sound quality.

Egg - Egg (1970)

With a strong Canterbury influence implanted into their sound, Egg's first album has the band looking to establish their niche as a progressive group, with Dave Stewart's sharp, effective keyboard work outlining much of the album's overall feel. Mixing jazz and progressive rock drifts, the tracks on Egg contain rhythms and meters that are never at a standstill, with ongoing instrumental action encompassing nearly every track. Numerous classical overtones make for a familiar listen against a backdrop of loose-ended jazz fusion and an unordered yet inviting array of haphazard progressive spillages. The fragmented instrumentals sport an attractive inexperience, especially on "Bulb" and "The Song of McGillicudie the Pussilanimous," which also introduce Egg's lighthearted whimsy. Both "Blane" and "I Will Be Absorbed" represent the most colorful example of Egg's progressive rock fundamentals, with quick tempos and assertive keyboard runs. Although Egg's cohesiveness as a band is in its early stages, Dave Stewart ascertains himself as an elite keyboard player throughout the album, later moving on to play with Hatfield and the North and National Health. Egg's next album, 1971's Polite Force, has them sounding firmer and more self-contained, but their debut presents an entertaining example of different progressive genres playing off of one another.
