Legendary progrock- masterpiece, sometimes aggressive, sometimes melancholic. Superb guitars, distorted voices and great organ works recall PINK FLOYD or GROUP 1850. This longplay CD also contains many bonus tracks, among them a former 25-minutes-version of "flash".
.
First legit reissue of this 1971 Krautrock album, recorded in Köln and issued on Bacillus at the time. Includes 6 bonus rehearsal tracks from 1970 plus an unreleased 25 minute version of "Flash". A couple of tracks like the massive 13-minute opening "Dirty Yellow Mist" and "The Executioner" reveal the secrets of early 70s psych/rock as well as anything to be named, w/ monotonous, spacy riffing grinding into the third mind zone. "My Solid Ground's first and only record presented the full atmosphere of psychedelia -- sometimes aggressive, sometimes melancholy. Superb guitars, hypnotical voices and classical keyboards recall Pink Floyd or Group 1850 at it's best."

The Next Morning - The Next Morning (Jimi Hendrix) (1971)

A wickedly rare phase 'n' fuzz fueled slice of psychedelia circa 1970, featuring ripsnorting guitar-work by Bert Bailey.
These guys were Caribbean immigrants (four from Trindad, one from the Virgin Islands) and they idolized the Who and Jimi Hendrix.

Bob Smith - The Visit (1970)

A double album that was released in 1971, this didn't recieve adequate distribution for a considerable period, so it wasn't really available until late '72.This is a classic psych album in every sense: trippy effects, phased/wah'd guitars, searing leads, wasted vocals/subject matter and the obligatory 'experiment' pieces, tho' these are not as prominent as you'd figure knowing that this is a double lp. Despite the title, this is not a solo album by any means, as Mr. Smith had a large backup band that featured members of the Mothers of Invention.I got this out today and have been enjoying it all morning- it's not gimmicky or wacked-out or anything, just good, solid psych that still holds up well today. Personal favorite is 'Don't Tell Lady', a loud psycher about hiding the ingestions of certain substances from a spouse: "If you go out tonight/And I can't stand up tonight/I said don't tell lady/Tonight"... Ha! This is (of course) sung over a snaky flanged out stoner guitar lead, heh-heh. A reasonable buy if you have all of the 'mainstream' psych albums and are still hungry. Great sounding CD reissue of a rare and highly prized double album, from the west coast. Chock full of psychedelic goodness fuzz, effects, harpsichord and lost drifting vocals. A superb CD.
.
Another significant collectable from the California rock scene that will interest readers. Not really a solo album at all, as Smith is backed by eight very capable musicians. Much of the music is instrumental, achieving a mystical and 'psychedelic' atmosphere, although there are a few more mainstream tracks and some nice bluesy guitar work in places. Interesting and a must for fans of psychedelia. The original pressing (especially with the amazing psychedelic poster) has skyrocketed in value in recent years; as such, the recent reissue is most welcome. It includes a bonus disc of material recorded by Stop, Bob's later band from the early seventies.
Prior to the Kent album, Bob was with Silverskin, and before that, Lid (not to be confused with The Lyd), who recorded an album in 1968 which remains unissued.
.
Don Preston was a member of Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention and Daryl Dragon was with The Dragons. Daryl worked on various projects with his brothers Doug and Dennis (Farm, A Sea For Yourself, et. al.) before finding fame and fortune as the 'Captain' in Captain and Tenille. Bob Smith continues performing locally in Florida and has finished a new recording, The Visit - Destiny 2000 From Bob Smith which he will make available on his own Southern Rose label.

Probably the Masters Apprentices best work. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, Choice Cuts epitomised the progressive rock genre. Contains such gems as 'Rio De Camero', 'Because I Love You' and 'Easy To Lie'. This album bridged the gap of the '60's band and brought the Masters into the new era of the '70's. No other Australian band from the '60's made the transition and Choice Cuts is testament to the Masters' endurance and credibility.

On returning from England the band set to work touring to earn some money. The first concert, recorded as they stepped off the boat is captured on 'Nickelodeon', released in June. One of the earliest attempts at a live recording in Australia. The results of working in England and recording at the Abbey Road studios was released in April. 'Choice Cuts' issused without liner notes or names meant the reviewers only had the music to go on. Rave reviews in NME & Melody Maker meant the band had to quickly reform (they'd split due to lack of funds) and head off back to England on a boat!!, Only to get there after all the fuss had died down. Another 8 weeks on the boat enabled the Masters to work on songs for another album.

Extremely Accomplished Debut from this Massachusetts Band, Originally Released in the Us on RCA. Following the Eponymous Album’s Success, the Band Toured Extensively as the Opening Act for the Allman Brothers. Fat ’s Mix of East Coast Blues and West Coast Psychedelia, Strongly Influenced by Quicksilver Messenger Service Et Al, Could have Propelled the Band Into the Big Time, but an Unfortunate Drug Bust Led RCA to Cancel a Planned Follow-up Album, and Try as They Might, the Group were Unable to Secure Another Recording Contract, Although Two Further Albums were Released in the Late ‘70s, Both of which were Produced by Ex-mountain Man, Felix Papallardi. Over the Years Fat Toured with a Host of Rock Luminaries, Sharing the Stage With, Amongst Others, Grand Funk Railroad, Little Richard, Bonnie and Delaney, Johnny Winter and Robin Trower, but Unfortunately their Success as a Live Band Didn’t Translate Into Commercial Success.

Nitzinger - One Foot In History (1972)

Reviewer: Jeffrey D. Prill (Peoria, Illinois United States) One Foot In History is just a gem. At this point, Nitzinger employed Bugs Henderson as their second guitarist, though he appeared practically on every song on the first album--just remember the "Beware of Bugs" warning was referring to Bugs Henderson. I will always love this album. I've played the vinyl to the point where Cripple Gnat Bounce is beginning to skip on two occassions--and this is an original copy. But on side one,Take a Picture, Motherlode, God Bless the Pervert, and Eartheater complement each other very nicely. There's some excellent dual guitar work on all four songs. Very tight compositions which have to be blasted in order to be appreciated. Driftwood is a great song, and I believe it's placed strategically at the end of side 2 two give our eardrums a rest, but it's definitely not filler. There is no such thing as filler on a Nitzinger album. Side two opens with two great guitar duos,Let the Living Grow and The Cripple Gnat Bounce. It has you bouncing around and getting all sweaty ... By the way, Cripple Gnat Bounce was redone by Bugs Henderson and the Shuffle Kings on his Four Tens Strike Again Album back in 1996. I suggest that you look for it. And Bugs once again covered Hero of the War on his 1998 CD, Have Blues Must Rock--and I highly recommend both albums. The album winds down--if you want to call it that--with the title track, ONe Foot in History--which always gets me singin' out loud, and Uncle John--another great Southern heavy folk rocker. This is just one excellent ground breaking album which should have put Southern Rock & Roll on its ears. The songs are always in my mind some 33 years later, and this is the vinyl. I've never heard the remaster, but I say if there are bonus tracks on this album then buy it, it would be an addition to one great album.
.
This album is much like it's predecessor, hard driving - straight ahead rock, from a Texas blues perspective. It's cleaner (not as sloppy) but the spirit is the same: rock your socks off. The bonus track, Texas Blues/Jelly Roll from the Mar y Sol festival is worth the price of admission. It's a classic slow-blues-with-punch, song that you might have heard from Johnny Winter or Stevie Ray Vaughan, had either of them been able to think up the great line "Baby, if you put your brain on a razor blade, it'd look like a bee-bee rolling down a 4-lane highway."

Synanthesia - Synanthesia (1969)

A highly eclectic album by a folky Scottish trio, this effort ostensibly draws upon sources from Greek and Roman mythology and history, as titles like Minerva, Morpheus, Vesta, and Mnemoysne readily testify. The music is very gentle, with mostly flute, vibraphone and guitar accompanying the melodies. Again, this has nothing to do with "acid folk", but stands well on its own as a mildly unusual and pleasant collection of songs. Stand-out track: the Fresh Maggots soundalike Fates, with brilliant wind instruments.

Most Unusual Blend of Instruments Are Featured Here by this Mellow Scottish Trio Including Vibraphone and Flute as Well as Guitars, Oboe and Mandolin. Recorded in 1969, it is a Highly Eclectic Album and Draws Upon Greek Mythology for Inspiration and Direction. Quite Beautiful and So, So Timeless.
