REPOST: Galaxy - Day Without The Sun (1976)
This heavy progressive rock album is an important item among collectors. Originally recorded in Florida in 1976 and unearthed by the Italian Akarma label, this is a wonderful mixture of space rock, West Coast guitar solos and Gong-like female vocals which combine superbly to richochet around your brain. The 14 minute title track is awesome....
Band Description: Galaxy is a space rock band that played their largest performances in Jacksonville, Florida. The first was in 1975 at the 4th of July street concert sponsored by the Jacksonville Beach chamber of commerce. Galaxy was the only band performing that night, playing to a crowd the newspapers said was over 30 thousand strong. Galaxy performed 42 of their original rock songs that they had learned after being together only 3 months. They performed at the same venue the following year. Galaxy won WAPE radio's first "battle-of-the-bands" in 1976, winning the prize of a recording contract with Bang Records in Atlanta, Ga. that turned out only to be a midnight recording session.
Their winning year brought them to the concert stages to large audiences that included : Annhauser Busch Natural Light Beer debuton Jax. Beach to a crowd of over 250 thousand rock fans as thefinal feature act following a country rock band called "Road Dust" and during Galaxy's concert Leif Garrette made a guest appearance. Galaxy also performed to a Daytona Beach crowd of more that 20 thousand fans at the city's famous band shell on the beach. They recorded only one album called Day Without The Sun which is still available to on line collectors and Space Rock enthusiasts. During that following year.
Band History: Galaxy now has a new Space Rock CD called Find Another World and an "author's edition reissue CD of their first LP Day Without The Sun. The first reissue CD of Day w/o the Sun was produced and distributed by Akarma/Comet Records in Italy in 1999.
Galaxy's own record label SKY QUEEN RECORDS has always been unsigned by any major label up to the present.

Hello 7-Floor,
Thank you for that wonderful blog about Galaxy. My name is Jan (aka Pepper) Leonardy. I am the Bass Guitarist and one of the original founding members of the Jacksonville Fl. Rock Band Galaxy.
It's wonderful that our music has survived and is now finding a new audience. We always thought we were ahead of our time and space!
I just wish that royalties for the Akarma CD and the subsequent cd rips were, were being paid to the excellent song writers and performers Marylynn Geiger and Mark Fabbri.
I personally am not on the BMI ASCAP copyright so I would not receive any royalties. I only bring this up as a matter of ethics and the amount of personal pride I have in the songs we created and performed on this Album!
We did record another set of songs after winning the WAPE Battle of the Bands but the "Record Deal" was only for recording studio time.
Since I left the band in 1978, I was not on the second Album released much later. I don't know if any of the songs we recorded in that session were included.
Anyway I just wanted to say "Thank you" From an old rock n roller that looks back fondly on his time with Galaxy as the most creative, energetic and successful as a musician and performer.
Oh! BTW. The largest event we played was the Opening of the Beaches, Budweiser Beach Party with an estimated 125,000 in attendance!

I've got only one thing to comment on... And that is the fact that I personally spent some time with both Mark & Marylynn during the mid 80's even have a guitar I own from which I bought from Mark( drill hole and all !) which is for playing the guitar "Mark's Way" upside down! The last thing I ever heard from them was that things were beginning to "Take off Again"
Question ? Where in the heck is "Galaxy" (Mark & Marylynn)Now ?

i read that mark and marylynn live in Italy. i own the lp day without the sun (sky queen label) and Very 1st Stone on the (Akarma label) and i hope there getting there royalties... what i don't own is the new cd i keep hearing about.. (Find Another World). Where can i locate that cd?

Just a few words from the drummer. Jan, I hope you get the reply. I know you think that Mark and Marilyn have made tons of money from the album but nothing is further from the truth. They do not get ANY royalties. Tom Markham sold the copyrights to Akarma for a measly $450. Now when you do a search you see it's a collector's item and there's even tracks being sold on Amazon and itunes but they don't get a dime. Welcome to the sad world of internet pirating which has become an accepted practice. Bottom line is they got screwed. So Jan, you're pipe-dream of some fortune that you should have a part of is just that... a dream.
Oh, and btw, Jan. They only sell the new cd's from home and don't sell many of those. I remember Mark said that the last time you talked to him eleven years or so ago you said (more or less) "Call me when the money starts coming in and if it doesn't then don't bother." Something like that. I hope you get to read this so you'll know YOU were not slighted, nor was I. It just didn't happen.
It's sad to read the hard feelings surrounding this project, it sounds like it should have been a lot more, and hearing the music, I'd have to agree.
I'm thankful for the wide availability of music on the internet, otherwise I would have never heard and been able to enjoy the work of Galaxy, because radio stations have just dropped the ball on playing music like this.
I don't know what the solution is, but maybe bands could see the music as the intro, the art, share it freely and do concerts around it and get paid that way. If you still own the name Galaxy, make some new music that you own and get out there. I'd go if you came to my city.

Just wanted you to know that if there ever happens to be any royalties or commissions coming to the originators of Galaxy Day Without The Sun, you will be included.(although don't hold your breath expecting anybody selling Galaxy's music on line to actually ask us where they can send the extra profits they are making) ha ha. Big bucks not there. And no residuals forthcoming.
I guess Galaxy fits in with all the other long gone groups, like Quicksilver, Blue Cheer and a bunch of other bands Akarma "contracted" for on the cheap and frugal.
At least they got the ball rolling as far as getting Galaxy music on the internet.
